We have an opening for a synthetic chemist to work in energetic materials synthesis and analysis.  You will support research & development activities in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and sample preparation/processing.  This position is in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration Group within the Materials Science Division.
This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Implement, analyze, and resolve generic synthetic problems and establish solutions leading to materials which meet the desired scientific specifications or programmatic needs.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure project needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Contribute to project/program milestone completion and provide solutions to problems of limited complexity using standard techniques and methodologies.
- Obtain certification as a qualified explosives handler and work with energetic materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Conduct advanced research in the design, synthesis, characterization, and scale-up of energetic materials.
- Communicate research progress through publications, presentations, and internal reports.

- Develop research activities relevant to the needs of Laboratory programs and/or external funding agencies.
 
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field, with a demonstrated experience in chemical synthesis, purification, and characterization.

- Experience in analytical techniques including HPLC, NMR, IR, GC/MS, and Raman.
- Experience in the synthesis of functionalized heterocycles.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a qualified explosives handler.
- Ability to work in a collaborative research and development environment.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting fundamental experimental results and preparing and reporting findings.
- Experience with recrystallization.
- Proficient verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills necessary to work with experimental teams which may include members from all disciplines and working effectively under conflicting and rigorous deadlines.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- PhD in organic chemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Record of peer-reviewed publications and/or technical reports.
- Experience leading synthetic chemistry projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in oxidation and nitration chemistry for the preparation of energetic compounds.

- Experience with polymer synthesis and characterization projects.
- Experience with microwave and/or photochemical synthesis.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
