We have openings for engineers with core strengths in computational methods for supersonic and hypersonic flows to join the Thermal Fluids Group. The Thermal Fluids Group provides advanced engineering analysis support across all Laboratory programs and is active in pursuing new business and external research opportunities. You will create and define new solutions and business opportunities where fundamental science and knowledge fusion can be applied to solve the most challenging problems facing the Laboratory. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Provide engineering analysis and algorithm development solutions for supersonic and hypersonic computational modeling and simulation capabilities.
- Provide engineering analysis solutions to cross functional teams on research, design and application tasks.
- Contribute engineering analysis solutions to analysis, test and design efforts.
- Document results and findings for internal and external publication.
- Manage time and communication in a fast-paced, multitasking environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Lead projects in modeling, simulation and analysis projects.
- Act as primary liaison to upper management and external collaborators.
- Lead proposal development teams for new R&D topics. Perform advanced R&D in numerical, analytical or experimental methods that support core competencies.
- Prepare and present key results in public journals and professional conferences.
- MS degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive experience in aerodynamics, fluid dynamics and/or numerical methods.
- Knowledge of and/or experience in hypersonic aerothermodynamic theory, large-eddy and/or direct-numerical simulations.
- Experience with modeling and simulation tools relating to turbulent and/or high-speed flows.
- Programming experience especially with advanced C++, C and/or Fortran95 algorithm development.
- Experience managing several concurrent tasks.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Experience working effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience in applied analysis of engineering physics.
- Significant experience leading and completing engineering design and analysis projects.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
Desired Qualifications
- PhD degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Publication list commensurate with ongoing professional growth and experience writing high quality research proposals.
- Project management skills.
- Significant experience with conjugate heat transfer in aerospace applications.
- Significant experience with combustion, reactive chemistry and/or ablation.
- Significant experience with massively parallel algorithm development and high-performance computing.
- Significant experience with experiment design and data acquisition.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
