We have an opening for a VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Systems Engineer, with a focus on VMware Horizon View VDI environment providing highly available geographically distributed infrastructure. You will work as part of a team, responsible for the enterprise end-user computing environment. This position is in the Information Technology Solutions Division (ITSD) within the Computing Directorate, in support of the LivIT Program.
This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Monitor daily VMware Horizon environment to ensure continual stability.
- Develop and maintain Windows 10 gold image.
- Develop virtual and physical application packages.
- Configure and support user home directories.
- Manage and configure thin client endpoints.
- Proactively research emerging technologies to understand, make recommendations, and train others on these technologies.
- Work with a wide range of teams across various issues, locations, and time zones.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Manage multiple advanced parallel tasks and priorities of customers and stakeholders to ensure deadlines are met, while leveraging team member’s skills
- Independently design, implement, deploy, and maintain VDI/VI systems
- Develop tools and procedures to improve VDI/VI services and automate various complex tasks
- Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field or the equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
- Proficient desktop engineering experience.
- Broad experience in managing VMware Horizon or similar VDI environments.
- Proficient experience in automation and writing scripts, such as PowerShell.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Window 10 desktop operating system.
- Strong understanding of vSphere and vSAN.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
- Proficient verbal and written communication skill necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience with scripting and automation, such as PowerShell.
- Advanced experience providing innovative approaches and applying new technologies to broadly defined tasks and complex projects.
- Ability to independently identify process deficiencies and create solutions to improve operational efficiency.
Desired Qualifications (optional)
- Comprehensive knowledge of virtual client system life cycle management.
- Experience with Dynamic Environment Manager and AppVolumes.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is an At Will appointment. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position. If final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, Career Indefinite status may be maintained [should funding allow].
