Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for an experienced metallurgist, with a background in casting, welding, and/or metals processing, to drive the development and integration of electron beam cold hearth melting technology working in collaboration with multiple external vendors, other DOE laboratories, and external subject matter experts in industry.  You will work with multidisciplinary teams of material scientists, engineers, physicists, and technologists to develop and implement plans for equipment installation, testing, process qualification, operation, and ultimately material qualification - coordinating characterization, testing, and metrology data with material and process models to gain insight on structure-property relationships in a wide range of material systems. This position is in the Metallurgy and Advanced Microscopy Group in the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Develop and implement operating procedures and test plans to develop electron beam cold hearth melting technology.
- Perform process optimization informed by process monitoring, product inspection, and characterization.
- Train and educate technologists on vacuum processing, cold hearth melting, and casting fundamentals.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers at the vendor site and at other DOE sites.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address complex problems and ability to document the results of that work.
- Maintain and establish laboratory safety and security protocols.
- Travel domestically and internationally 25% time.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others, utilizing advanced knowledge and skills.
- Manage the scope, schedule, budget, and quality of work in support of the program and provide regular updates to management.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on metallurgical processing, including electron beam cold hearth melting and function of instruments.

- MS in metallurgy, welding, chemistry, materials science, or other closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- In-depth experience in metallurgical processing—foundry processing (cold hearth melting), casting, and/or welding.
- Significant experience with metallurgical characterization and qualification testing.
- Significant experience with and understanding of vacuum processing.
- Proven high safety standards and critical thinking.
- Keen interest in process development.
- Ability to work in a collaborative team research environment and to support fellow scientists, technologists, and engineers.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills to support project planning and reporting and presentations to program managers and funding organizations.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level.
- PhD in metallurgy, welding, chemistry, materials science, or other closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Subject matter expert in metallurgical processes, with substantial experience leading multi-person teams to develop and implement creative solutions to complex problems.
- Expert communication skills, with the ability to present and explain advanced concepts and advise senior management and/or external entities.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with electron beam cold hearth melting.
- Knowledge and understanding of solidification science.
- Knowledge and understanding of process-structure-property relationships.
