Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the continuous synthesis, processing, and scale-up of new energetic compounds and their precursors.  You will be part of a team of chemists and engineers investigating the synthesis, formulation and testing of new energetic compounds and will interact with personnel in the Energetic Materials Center in the High Explosives Application Facility. This position is in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration Group of the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct fundamental research in the design and optimization of continuous synthesis and purification processes toward new energetic compounds.
- Design of continuous synthetic processes utilizing commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software.
- Develop custom/COTS continuous systems for scale-up synthesis and processing utilizing in situ analytical tools.
- Design, implement, analyze and resolve generic synthetic problems and establish solutions leading to materials which meet desired scientific specifications or programmatic needs. This includes analytical/separation procedures (normal and reverse phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), etc.) and spectroscopy (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Infrared (IR), Ultraviolet (UV), Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), Raman).
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Provide verbal and written communication on research progress through publications, presentations, and internal reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in Experimental Chemical Engineering/Synthetic Chemistry or related field.
- Experience with analytical techniques (NMR, IR, UV, HPLC, GC-MS, Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS), and Raman.
- Knowledge in the scale-up of continuous and telescoped processes including: synthesis, crystallization, liquid-liquid separation, heterogeneous reaction mixtures (liquid/liquid, liquid/solid, gas/solid/liquid, etc).
- Knowledgeable of the concepts and understanding of state of the art process intensification techniques.
-- Familiarity in the synthesis, purification, and characterization of new compounds, and a broad-based knowledge in synthetic organic chemistry and heteroatom chemistry.
- Familiarity with reduction to practice in the scale-up of continuous and telescoped processes including: synthesis, crystallization, liquid-liquid separation, heterogeneous reaction mixtures (liquid/liquid, liquid/solid, gas/solid/liquid, etc).
 - Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Ability to become a qualified explosives handler.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with energetic compounds, including pyrotechnics, explosives or propellants, and in nitration chemistry.
- Experience in the synthesis of functionalized heterocycles via condensation reactions, andin feedback system control for chemical synthesis optimization.
- Experience in the use and modification of Programmable Logic Controller based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) platforms, such as Wonderware InTouch (alternative platforms a plus).

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
