We have an opening for an experienced Mechanical Engineer.  You will work on complex alignment systems with integrated electrical, optical, and mechanical components.  You will provide engineering solutions for a wide range of projects needed to carry the National Ignition Facility (NIF) into the future.  You will be involved throughout the product development life cycle, from concept initiation, gathering requirements to prototyping, testing, and commissioning of new hardware.  You will be part of a diverse team responsible for ensuring maximum productivity and data fidelity from these instruments, which are critical to successfully achieving 400+ NIF shots per year.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide technical leadership and coordination of activities to a diverse team of engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians.
- Lead the development of new capability design and commissioning for current and next generation systems as well as repairs, improvements, and upgrades.
- Utilizing a systems approach, present project plans which include analysis, error budgets, value engineering and schedule to subject matter expert groups and stakeholders at design reviews.
- Interface with multiple expert groups and present engineering solutions and unique design approach throughout entire project phase.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure the successful integration and proper functioning of commissioned systems.
- Plan and execute work to ensure the readiness and functionality of system spares for rapid deployment in the NIF facility.
- Develop and execute commissioning, maintenance, and calibration procedures for subsystems including analyzing, summarizing, and presenting resulting data.
- Lead formal and informal design reviews; exercise independent judgment in determining methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Manage the scope, schedule, budget, and quality of the engineering work done in support of the alignment systems projects and provide regular updates to management.  Define requirements for and design experiments to develop advanced capabilities.
- Serve as a Subject Matter Expert on a subset of instruments within the Alignment Systems suite including the detailed hardware design and function of the instruments.
- Lead small multidisciplinary engineering projects to completion.

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related discipline or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant hands-on experience with the design, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of complex opto-mechanical measurement systems.
- Advanced knowledge of opto-mechanical systems including remote control of opto-mechanical devices using computer-based systems.
- Advanced knowledge of common data analysis techniques, statistics, and/or systems engineering.
- Significant experience solving complex technical problems working with multidisciplinary teams.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Subject matter expertise in precision hardware and/or opto-mechanical system design.
- Extensive experience in technical leadership and/or management of operations for large and complex technical systems operated by multidisciplinary teams.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise management.

Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or related field.
- Experience in laser alignment, laser beam spatial, temporal and spectral characterization, optical, opto-mechanical, and electro-optical design.  Understanding of CCD and CMOS cameras, image acquisition and processing techniques.
- Experience working on large-scale laser system operations, maintenance, or production support.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
