Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Staff Physicists in nuclear theory. You will be part of a group that performs research in nuclear theory to provide a fundamental understanding of atomic nuclei, their role in the universe, and their impact on the Laboratory’s national security missions. You will perform fundamental research in nuclear theory, in an area that complements current activities in ab initio and density-functional approaches to nuclear structure, nuclear reactions, and nuclear fission, the study of quantum chromodynamics, and relativistic heavy-ion theory. This position is in the Nuclear Data & Theory (NDT) group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

The position(s) will be filled at the SES.3 or SES.4 level, depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
-  Develop an advanced research program that complements and enhances the current activities of the NDT group described above.
-  Provide advanced scientific/technical expertise and guidance to LLNL programs/organizations that require nuclear theory methods/technology/solutions.
-  Provide solutions to complex scientific problems in nuclear theory, while collaborating with members of the NDT group, as well as external researchers.
-  Recruit and mentor postdoctoral researchers and/or students to support research activities in the NDT group.
-  Pursue research funding from sources both within and outside LLNL.
-  Document research and development activities; report results via publications in peer-reviewed scientific/technical journals and technical reports; give presentations at national and international meetings.
-  Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish program goals.

In Addition at the SES.4 Level
-  Influence broad project vision, strategy, and technical direction acting as a technical leader on projects/programs, while serving as a subject-matter expert within the group and to the group’s external contacts.
-  Develop innovative solutions to highly-complex nuclear theory problems, while serving as a mentor to junior group members.
-  Develop and implement a broader strategy to enhance the NDT group’s visibility and leadership role in the scientific community and/or the national laboratory community, and to position the group well to attract funding.

-  PhD in Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Astrophysics, Nuclear Chemistry, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
-  Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more areas of theoretical nuclear physics, nuclear data, nuclear astrophysics, and high-performance computing.
-  Advanced independent research and ability to find innovative solutions to scientific and technical problems.
-  Ability to engage in new projects, to respond to emerging opportunities/needs, and to work on two or more projects in parallel.
-  Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
-  Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment with a diverse group of scientists.
-  Advanced verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively present and explain results of scientific research in presentations at seminars, meetings and journal publications.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Subject matter expertise in nuclear theory or related area, evidenced by a strong publication record in the field, leadership role(s) in the scientific community and/or the national laboratory community.
-  Expert knowledge and substantial experience developing new scientific projects and research proposals and/or demonstrated record of scientific breakthrough developments.
-  Expert communication skills with ability to influence management and help steer project direction.
Desired Qualifications:
-  Experience developing new scientific programs and research proposals or proven experience in production of nuclear databases/evaluated data files.
