For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Quantum Engineer to support a full range of well-defined research in the areas of quantum computation, materials, and sensing.  You will work in a rapidly growing field to design and deploy next generation quantum technologies. This position is in the Quantum Coherent Device Physics group in the Condensed Matter Section of the Physics Division. 
 
Essential Duties 
Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technical personnel to provide scientific support to various programmatic tasks and quantum coherent device physics research with emphasis on radio frequency electronics, mechanical design, and low noise system integration.
- Provide solutions to fundamental problems related to quantum coherent device physics. 
- Collaborate with other team members in the design, testing, and troubleshooting of custom radio frequency electronics.
- Contribute to the design, testing, and troubleshooting of mechanical assemblies.
- Develop, define and prepare operating procedures while maintaining laboratory safety standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the SES.2 Level
- Provide engineering solutions or independent technical analysis to resolve moderately complex to complex technical issues.
- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on analysis of multiple factors.
- Serve as a key team member in cutting-edge quantum technologies research and development.
 
Qualifications 
BS in RF engineering, quantum physics, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. 
Sufficient experience with milling machines and lathes
Ability to work effectively with an experimental team under conflicting and rigorous deadlines.
Sufficient experience in mechanical design and computer aided design with the ability to design, assemble, and implement test bed quantum systems.
- Fundamental interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively at a collaborative research environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

 In Addition, at the SES.2 Level
- MS in RF engineering, quantum physics, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad experience identifying, defining, and solving multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost effective manner and experience in moderately complex to complex prototype development, testing, and fielding.
- Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory operations or quantum technologies process development and the ability to meet scheduled deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
Desired Qualification 
- Experience in developing and supporting quantum technologies 
- Experience with RF simulations in HFSS, COMSOL, Microwave Office, or other software kit
- Experience in CNC programming

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
