For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Project Engineer with hands-on experience in Optoelectronics to support a wide variety of new and ongoing projects for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF & PS) Directorate.  You will be responsible for developing and deploying state-of-the art high intensity, high energy, laser and diagnostic systems. Areas of specialization include a combination of some or all the following: solid state laser physics and technology, short pulse generation and amplification, temporal pulse stretching and compression, nonlinear effects in short pulse systems, optical parametric amplification, ultrafast spatial and temporal pulse measurement techniques; sensors and instrumentation; systems engineering; laser performance modeling; and documentation.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Develop, define and coordinate the design efforts of a multidisciplinary team to meet technical and project challenges.
- Contribute to the development of detailed workforce plans, schedules and milestones; coordinate and execute the project plan.
- Define technical tasks within the project as needed to specify, procure, evaluate and deploy unique laser and diagnostic systems.
- Research, design, develop, analyze, model, test, and field advanced laser technologies, systems, diagnostics and technologies physics to support evolving missions for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF & PS) Directorate.
- Execute and interpret laser experiments that test new physics in collaboration with laboratory scientists and engineers.
- Construct, run, and improve laser performance models utilizing analytical code and numerical simulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Apply advanced engineering solutions and technical analysis to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on in-depth analysis of tangible and intangible factors.
- Provide technical direction to small teams and work as a primary technical contact on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Master’s degree in Optics, Electrical Engineering or Physics, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience in short pulse laser physics, chirped pulse amplification, short laser pulse characterization, and nonlinear optics as applied to laser development and operations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of writing controls software (e.g. Labview) and interfacing with hardware.
- Demonstrated problem solving, troubleshooting, decision making, and analytical skills necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions to moderately complex issues.
- Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within designated budget.
- Working knowledge of Excel, MS Project and Powerpoint software to generate project reports.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced leadership skills for leading and managing small, multidisciplinary teams.
- Significant experience coordinating and defining engineering assignments and project management functions in a multi-user experimental facility.
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Optics, Electrical Engineering or Physics.
- PMP (Project Management Program) certification.
- Advanced degree in the fields of project management, project engineering, or systems engineering.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
