For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Optoelectronics Engineer with hands-on experience to research, design, develop, analyze, model, test and field advanced laser technologies, systems and diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF & PS). You will be responsible for developing and deploying state-of-the art laser diagnostic systems for the NIF Precision Diagnostic System (PDS). This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Contribute to the research, design, development, analysis, and testing of field advanced laser technologies, systems, and diagnostics to support evolving missions for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences (NIF & PS) Directorate.
- Participate in experiments in the fields of solid state laser physics and technology, broadband pulse generation and amplification, temporal pulse stretching and compression, optical parametric amplification, ultrafast spatial and temporal pulse measurement techniques and diagnostic systems; sensors and instrumentation; systems engineering.
- Use fundamental knowledge to support the modernization and commission of new precision laser diagnostics as part of the National Ignition Facility.
- Provide engineering solutions to resolve technical and programmatic issues of limited complexity.
- Prepare engineering documentation and participate in engineering design reviews.
- Interface with immediate supervisors, and project leads or other exempt professional in the group or division to complete various projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Provide engineering solutions to resolve moderately complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Execute and interpret laser experiments that test new physics in collaboration with laboratory scientists and engineers.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure that programmatic needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge of electro-optical equipment such as sources, detectors, sensors, lasers, characterization equipment; collecting, analyzing, interpreting data; writing test plans, documenting test results and generating reports.
- Fundamental knowledge in pulsed laser physics, characterization, and nonlinear optics as applied to laser development, operations, and laser diagnostics.
- Knowledge of analytical software such as MATLAB or Mathcad.
- Possess the decision making and analytical skills necessary to independently anticipate, analyze, and provide solutions to problems of limited complexity, while adhering to defined practices and procedures.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Experience identifying, defining, and solving moderately complex problems in a timely, cost effective manner.
- Comprehensive knowledge of solid state laser physics and technology and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Experience in systems engineering.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree in the fields of project management, project engineering, or systems engineering.
- Experience planning and directing work with technical objectives, estimating effort, setting milestones, and managing within designated budget.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
