For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to carry out research and analysis of energy systems for a variety of applications including optimization of the energy-water nexus, carbon dioxide removal and carbon capture utilization and storage.  You will use and develop a variety of technoeconomic analysis and lifecycle assessment (LCA) methodologies to assess these technologies and how they interact with the broader energy, climate and water systems. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.
Essential Duties
- Conduct original research in the field of energy systems analysis.
- Analyze sampled, synthetic and modeled datasets relevant to energy, carbon and water flows throughout the energy system at multiple scales.
- Evaluate, develop and apply technoeconomic analysis and lifecycle assessment tools to technologies and pathways that enable clean and sustainable energy and water systems.
- Publish research results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and project managers to develop and apply new capabilities for technology assessments that inform engineering decisions and policy analysis.
- Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in mechanical, chemical, civil or environmental engineering; or closely related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge in one or more key areas:  energy systems analysis, lifecycle assessment, technoeconomic analysis, energy flow visualization, greenhouse gas emissions accounting, energy policy analysis.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of process design.
- Experience conducting research in energy systems, technology assessment, engineering or closely related field.
- Experience manipulating, analyzing, and visualizing complex model and statistical datasets relevant to energy and water systems.
- Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by published results and presentations.
- Ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with existing LCA software packages (e.g., OpenLCA) as well as development and application of lifecycle assessment methodologies for novel applications.
- Experience designing energy and/or chemical process systems for optimized energy, economic and environmental performance
- Experience with collaborative data management and visualization environments such as Python/Jupyter, R, eSankey, and Globus.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
