For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a creative and self-motivated architect/designer. You will collaborate with a diverse world-class project team to determine requirements and develop plans and concepts for project execution. This position is in the Project Management, Engineering and Construction Department.
 
This position will be filled at either the TSS.3 or TSS.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Determine functional requirements for new and/or modified office, laboratory and support spaces, and prepare design criteria documentation.
- Implement architectural designs utilizing design criteria, design effort estimates, calculations, schematics, red-line sketches, construction documents, procedures, and specifications.
- Prepare architectural drawings and specifications for new construction projects and the renovation of existing facilities, including clean rooms, laboratories, office spaces, conference rooms, secure facilities and support buildings.
- Coordinate the selection, specification and procurement of architectural system components with supply vendors.
- Provide design support for projects performed by outside contractors including reviewing drawings and specifications, submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, resolving field problems and performing inspections.
- Communicate directly with client representatives to verify design requirements and specifications, provide progress reviews and deliver presentations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the TSS.4 Level
- Provide input for project budgets, review cost estimates and schedules, and create scopes of work for internal and external architectural and engineering firms.
- Manage and coordinate the technical criteria and work effort of internal multi-disciplinary engineering teams, and manage the architectural scope and performance of highly complex design projects executed by external architectural/engineering firms, including leading design reviews to obtain approvals of project scope and designs.
- Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) knowledge for architectural, Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and building code compliance issues, including mentoring peers and less experienced designers in architectural principles and practices.
 
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Significant experience in design management, including project planning, programming, space planning, and scheduling.
- Significant experience designing range of projects of varying complexity, including coordination of multi-disciplinary team and stakeholders.
- Advanced knowledge of California Building Codes, ADA, and state and federal laws and regulations relating to building design and construction.
- Ability to manage demanding schedules and deadlines to successfully complete projects and multiple parallel tasks while maintaining flexibility and attention to detail with changing priorities.
- Ability to find creative solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis and frequent use of ingenuity and creativity around technical issues and design approaches.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact and effectively present and explain technical information and provide advice to management and external project sponsors.
- Significant experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and other applicable software.
In Addition at the TSS.4 Level
- Significant experience preparing budgets, cost estimating and adherence to completion dates and subject matter expert knowledge in architectural, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) and building codes.
- Significant experience providing technical leadership for highly complex projects, including detailed planning, preparing estimates, managing project budgets, scheduling, and coordination of stakeholders.
- Expert verbal and written communication, facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain and advise senior management.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Licensed as an architect in the State of California.
- Master of Architecture or other relevant advanced degree.
- LEED Accredited Professional, Certified Access Specialist (CASp), ICC certification as a plan examiner or building inspector, or other relevant professional certification.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

 

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
