For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to perform research and development on selected topics/areas such as synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, organic materials, and composites. You will actively participate in the design, synthesis, and testing of electrocatalysts and electrolytes for CO2 reduction in order to elucidate composition/activity relationships.  This position is in the Functional Materials Synthesis and Integration (FMSI) group of the Materials Science Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Design and build apparatus to measure catalyst activity and specificity.
- Characterize bulk and surface materials properties of catalysts, including morphology and composition.
- Characterize electrochemical properties of catalysts.
- Characterize catalyst product composition.
- Synthesize new catalysts with novel compositions and morphologies.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at conferences and at technical meetings and seminars.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Chemistry, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: electrochemistry, electrosynthesis, electrocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, surface chemistry, in situ characterization and spectroscopy, materials synthesis, fuel cells, bioelectrosynthesis.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.
 - Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Experience designing, fabricating, and testing electrosynthesis cells and setting up instrumentation, data collection and analysis.
- Experience with TEM, SEM, and/or AFM; NMR; CO2 reduction; gas and liquid chromotography.
- Experience with X-ray photoelectron and/or Auger spectroscopies, and FITR and Raman spectroscopies.

This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
