For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a research scientist with expertise in numerical or computational physics, astrophysics, or astronomy. The research will span topics in astronomical survey analysis, cosmology, optics modeling, and national security applications. This position is in the Physics Division/Applied Physics Section in the Optical Sciences group.

Essential Duties
- Conduct advanced and in-depth image analysis, detector and point spread function characterization, source analysis, atmosphere modeling, and image simulations.
- Develop complex statistical Bayesian models, hierarchical models, machine learning methods and numerical algorithms.
- Conduct astrophysical and Monte Carlo computations, and apply uncertainty quantification to computational physics modeling.
- Conduct High Performance and distributed computing.
- Conduct self-initiated research, maintain an awareness of technical literature in assigned areas, publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- PhD in physics, astronomy, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience conducting research in one or more of the topics listed in the essential duties.
- Advanced knowledge in software development with Python, C++, R,  Fortran, or similar languages.
- Significant experience performing independent research, and developing innovative solutions to complex scientific and technical problems that result in significant accomplishments.
- Significant experience working on a research team with individuals from diverse technical backgrounds, as well as function as an independent researcher with a high level of attention to details.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical and scientific reports, publications, deliver scientific presentations, explain technical information and provide advice to management.
- Significant experience presenting research results to a large audience and/or publication record in peer-reviewed literature.
- Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.

Desired Qualifications
- Significant experience in optical astronomy data analysis.
- Experience in software development including modern code best practices, version control, test-driven development, data pipeline infrastructure.
- Experience mentoring students on technical projects.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
