Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Short Pulse Laser Technologist (LEOT). You will provide technical support for the Advanced Radiological Capability (ARC) Petawatt Laser, but may also work on other short pulse or high-power laser systems within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate. NIF is a 24/7 operational facility and may occasionally require overtime, shift, and/or weekends to accomplish goals. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Provide general laser electro-optical technical and design integration support to scientists, engineers, and designers in support of the ARC project.
- Provide general technical support to the design, development, evaluation, and operation of complex short-pulse laser systems operating in the femtosecond to picosecond range.
- Provide general technical support to engineering tests, physics experiments, and program operations.
- Acquire and analyze data, provide solutions or alternate approaches to moderately complex mechanical problems using individual creativity and judgment.
- Prepare and work from instructional guides for repairing, calibrating, operating, and maintaining equipment and systems.
- Produce supportive documentation and graphics using drafting, design, engineering, and scientific programs on computer systems.
- Complete documentation of work orders defining tasks and materials used when completing tasks (electronically and/or paper).

- Assist in developing test parameters, troubleshooting and testing materials, components, or systems, identifying problems, and providing input on solutions.
- Independently identify, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex electro-mechanical problems using individual creativity and judgment; prioritize and provide work and technical guidance to others checking for accuracy, completeness, and function.
- Associate's (AS) degree in laser electro-optics technology, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience with opto-mechanical assemblies, precision laser alignment, and tolerancing.
- Experience performing alignment of laser oscillators, high-power amplifiers, and grating based stretchers and compressors.
- High-level skills and understanding of short-pulse laser technology and processes with the ability to design complex systems and solutions to problems.
- Experience in safe work and business practices.
- Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
