For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member. You will study, characterize and model the geochemical behavior of radionuclides in the environment using advanced spectroscopic and analytical techniques.  The position will be part of the Glenn T. Seaborg Institute and the Environmental Radiochemistry Group in the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
Essential Duties
- Design and conduct original research on the chemical and physical interactions among fluids, solids and metals.
- Integrate experimental, theoretical and modeling studies.
- Write journal publications and present research results at scientific and project meetings.
- Work with LLNL researchers, research staff members, and personnel from other national laboratories and universities in collaborative research projects.
- Represent LLNL at program reviews, briefings to other organizations, conferences and other technical meetings.
- Collaborate in development of strategic plans for future work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in environmental radiochemistry, chemistry, geochemistry, geology, soil science, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct original research.
- Experience designing and conducting laboratory experiments, especially experiments addressing the interaction of minerals and rocks with radionuclides.
- Extensive laboratory experience and expertise in using a broad range of analytical techniques (e.g., TEM, ICP-MS, SEM, XRD, BET, EXAFS, etc.).
- Established publication record.
- Thorough knowledge of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics.
- Basic understanding of the mechanisms of chemical reactions.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  None.


Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
