Job Description
We have an opening for a Criticality Safety Engineer (CSE) to provide technical leadership and oversight for LLNL operations with fissionable materials.  You will review and collaborate with operations and facility personnel in preparing nuclear criticality safety evaluations (NCSEs), implement criticality safety controls in Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs), Technical Specification Requirements (TSRs), Facility Safety Plans (FSPs), Operational Safety Plans (OSPs), and other work control/authorization documents, as well as provide instruction in the fundamentals of criticality safety, guidance to operating and design organizations, and respond to off-normal events and emergencies.  This position is in the Nuclear Criticality Safety Division.  
Essential Duties
- Provide comprehensive criticality safety leadership to a group of 15-20 multi-disciplinary operations and facility personnel in implementing the LLNL Nuclear Criticality Safety Program.
- Provide expert review of design, safety, authorization and work control documents to ensure appropriate implementation of LLNL’s Criticality Safety Program, ensuring consistency with criticality safety evaluations. 
- Lead teams of scientific and administrative personnel conducting independent reviews of nuclear criticality safety evaluations in conformance with DOE-STD-3007-2007 and LLNL administrative procedures.
- Provide direction and mentor less experienced CSEs and CSEs-in-Training regarding all aspects of criticality safety practice by assigning tasks and monitoring work flow to assure completion on schedule and within budget.
- Lead a group of technical and administrative personnel in conducting audits, assessments, and walkthrough inspections of criticality safety practices and operations in the field.
- Provide direction, according to established policies and guidance, to operational questions, safety pauses, off-normal events, incidents, and emergencies.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations to LLNL management and various internal and external stakeholders and sponsors.
- Manage technical personnel within the division including performance management, disciplinary actions, annual performance evaluations, ranking, career development, mentoring, and recruiting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- BS degree in nuclear engineering, physics, or related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience developing criticality safety evaluations supporting fissionable material operations in nuclear facilities.
- Subject matter expert knowledge of ANSI/ANS-8 standards, DOE orders, standards and guides.
- Experience using criticality safety software (such as COG, MCNP or SCALE), high-level programming languages (such as C, C++, FORTRAN, R), and scripting languages (such as Bash, Perl, Python).
- Significant experience managing and leading multidisciplinary teams, advanced interpersonal and leadership skills, and experience working effectively in a team environment.
- Advanced technical, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills with the ability to organize and effectively coordinate multiple and frequently conflicting, concurrent tasks, with good follow-through.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively communicate with all levels of staff, write procedures and safety related documentation, perform and document criticality safety evaluations, give technical presentations and safety briefings and provide advice to management.
Desired Qualifications
- Qualification as a criticality safety engineer at a DOE site or NRC-licensed facility.
- Human Reliability Program Certification.
- Experience with nuclear weapon systems, nuclear reactor systems, and subcritical/critical assemblies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
