For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have openings for Science Writers/Editors to support the Laboratory’s wide-ranging research and skilled researchers. You will be working in multiple scientific areas (such as physics, engineering, chemistry, and computer science), with a variety of communication vehicles (such as reports, white papers, websites, social media, technical posters, brochures and other marketing materials), and for a wide range of audiences (from high school students to Congressional staffers to senior scientists).   These positions are in the Technical Information Department.
 
These positions will be filled at either the G04.2 or G04.3 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Interpret complex technical information and translate into various forms of easily understandable and non-technical communications.
- Provide comprehensive editing/writing services for large and/or complex projects, potentially involving multiple media.
- Work with authors, project groups, divisions, or departments to coordinate projects; tasks include assessing incremental input and multiple manuscript iterations and developing communication styles for complex technical and possibly sensitive material.
- Coordinate complex production jobs, often with a publication team of editors, designers, animators, web developers, and/or printers.
- Develop and implement project plans and schedules for moderately complex projects; make and fulfill commitments on cost, schedule, and quality for communication products; lead ad hoc planning and status meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the G04.3 Level
- Develop original technical content, provide editing services, and/or coordinate the full spectrum of editorial and communication services (e.g., conducting interviews with scientists and writing articles; editing and writing content for reports, presentations, Web-based projects, and social media).
 - Serve as project manager by defining technical communications strategies, messages, audiences, and key deliverables for a variety of projects; coordinate all aspects of development and review work of team members.
- Partner with web administrators on the development, navigation, content, and functionality of websites; including quality assurance testing and release to production.
 
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering or scientific area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in the area of technical communication.
- Experience as a technical editor/writer, with some experience in multiple technical communication areas.
- Experience using effective editing/writing techniques for a variety of media including comprehensive knowledge of technical language, usage, and style conventions.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe software tools.
- Experience leading production and technical writing assignments.
- Proven ability to work both independently and within a demanding team environment in order to effectively meet tight deadlines while managing competing priorities.
In Addition at the G04.3 Level
- Experience leading complex multi-functional technical communication projects and teams with multiple technical groups in order to translate and develop communication materials that are easily understood by business-oriented customers including establishing team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
- Experience using broad-based professional technical editing/writing skills in a wide variety of scientific areas.
- Experience collaborating with senior managers, team members, and peers to meet organizational/programmatic objectives.  
 
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering, or in a scientific area.
- Experience with HTML, CSS, XML/XSL, and/or Drupal.
- Demonstrated editing/writing experience in a wide variety of scientific areas.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
