For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to perform original and independent research on the physics of dynamic impacts into heterogeneous material and independently contribute to projects involving the development and application of algorithms for predicting the compaction, strength and fracture of heterogeneous materials (both natural and man-made). You will perform algorithmic development, programming, computational modeling, and data analysis to support a study of impact into discontinuous geomaterials and have access to LLNL's extensive high performance computing and laboratory facilities. This position is in the Computational Geosciences Group in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Independently develop continuum constitutive models describing the complex response of porous and/or heterogeneous materials.
- Perform large scale simulations, analyze results and compare to laboratory data.
- Work as part of a scientific team and interact with physicists, geologists, experimentalists to design and implement research projects.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Publish both technical reports and peer-reviewed publications summarizing research findings, and present results at technical meetings and national conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in physics, applied mathematics, geology, geophysics, geomechanics, or related field.
- Experience developing and implementing computational strategies, with exceptional ability and knowledge in continuum mechanics.
- Knowledge of the development and/or application of three-dimensional continuum and/or discrete element codes.
- Knowledge of modern computer systems, computational tools, languages (including C/C++) and hardware configurations.
- Knowledge of the essential physics interactions that take place when geophysical materials are subjected to loading.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Initiative, interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of both continuum and discrete element codes.
- Experience with algorithmic development of continuum models for solid mechanics.
- Familiarity with Unix-like operating systems, including software development on such platforms.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  None.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
