For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member in the field of fundamental and applied research in experimental high-pressure science.  You will be conducting experiments in physics, materials science, and chemistry at extreme conditions with an emphasis on static high pressure. This position is in the High Pressure Physics Group, Condensed Matter Section of the Physics Division.
Essential Duties
- Contribute to the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems in phase transitions in materials (metals & molecular systems) at extreme pressure and temperature conditions.
- Develop and conduct table-top experiments using optical and laser spectroscopies, x-ray scattering (including diffraction, inelastic scattering, imaging and tomography), electric transport and magnetic studies of materials.
- Participate in the High Pressure Physics Group’s ongoing experiments conducted at off-site facilities.
- Present formal and informal overview of research progress at weekly meetings.
- Analyze, report, and present scientific results at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.
- Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in physics, materials science, chemistry or related scientific field.
- Experience with multi-megabar experiments in diamond anvil cell.
- Experience with in-situ measurements (e.g., optical spectroscopies, x-ray diffraction) of samples under extreme conditions.
- Experience with comprehensive analysis of data including but not limited to curve fitting and non-linear fitting routines.
- Experience with computer interfacing and control, e.g., LabVIEW.
- Experience using electronic instrumentation, e.g., oscilloscopes, function generators, lock-in amplifiers, basic electronic circuits.
- Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment, with experience utilizing a scientific approach to problem solving.
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed journals and proficient written and verbal communications skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports..
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working at national user facilities.
- Experience working in a U.S. government laboratory setting.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
