We have an opening for an Explosive Experiment Fielding Lead in the Weapon Physics and Design (WPD) Program. As the Explosive Experiment Fielding Lead, you will be responsible for a wide range of functions associated with the planning and execution of hydrodynamic experiments. These experiments are primarily conducted within LLNL’s S300 Firing areas, but also at off-site facilities such as Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Nevada National Security Site, and others. You will be responsible for interacting with a team of engineers, technicians, and experimentalists. In addition, you will provide oversight to execute explosives experiments safely and securely in support of WPD, Global Security, and other programs. You will have extensive collaboration with the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor, Explosive Research Experiment Leads, Facilities Managers, and a variety of institutional support service personnel. This position is in the Weapons and Complex Integration Directorate reporting to the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.2 or TSS.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.


Essential Duties

  • Provide oversight to successfully field explosive experiments at the S300 Bunkers and other locations.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team in the day-to-day activities of explosive experimentation programmatic operations, ensuring safe, secure, effective, and efficient operations.
  • Oversee experimental execution activities in high-hazard facilities, ensuring programmatic objectives are met within approved facility safety documentation.Ability to obtain and maintain LLNL explosive handler qualification.
  • Manage resources by appropriately allocating and assigning technical and support personnel to ensure the safe and efficient execution of programmatic activities.
  • Serve as an interface and coordinate with Facility Managers to manage work scope and schedules between experiment fielding and facility operations, including assignments for shared staff, maintenance activities, and safety reviews.
  • Understand and implement conduct of operations and work planning and control procedures and processes for explosives experiment fielding.Act as Alt-RI for relevant work control documents for fielding activities.
  • Develop and implement training and individual development programs for firing operations personnel.
  • Notify and report to the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor, Facility Manager, and other laboratory managers, events that have environmental, safety, health, security or quality significance, and assist in investigation and corrective actions for such events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


In Addition, at the TSS.3 level:

  • Provide technical leadership and oversight to successfully field explosive experiments at the S300 Bunkers and other locations.
  • Support the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor in establishing and maintaining the firing operations schedule by balancing personnel, resource, and facility availability in support of programmatic work.
  • Support the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor in the development, review, and verification of conduct of operations and work planning and control procedures, processes, and documentation for explosives experiment fielding.
  • Serve as a technical and/or operational peer reviewer for proposed experiments.
  • Identify, develop, and manage projects to improve fielding capabilities, coordinating with Facility Manager(s) and Weapons Infrastructure as needed.
  • Act as the Explosive Experiment Fielding Supervisor in their absence.



  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Broad experience in one or more areas related to hydrodynamic experiment design, fielding, explosive operations, or equivalent high-hazard operations.Areas include test-bed configuration, control systems, timing & firing, diagnostics, explosives, mitigation, safety, security, and local and federal regulations.
  • Experience with explosive or equivalent high-hazard operations.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of processes and procedures for handling and storage of classified information and materials.
  • Ability to approach and resolve difficult issues using mature judgement, creative problem-solving skills, and inclusive decision-making techniques.
  • Ability to implement corrective actions and process improvements.Advanced knowledge of identifying and analyzing hazards to develop and implement effective controls for unique experimental activities.


In addition, at the TSS.3 level:

  • Advanced leadership, communication, and team-building skills to lead collaborative, multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Advanced experience leading and managing explosive or equivalent high-hazard operations.
  • Advanced experience handling multiple projects of varying priority with excellent attention to detail and within the constraints of program, safety, and security requirements.
  • Experience in identifying and analyzing hazards and developing and implementing effective controls for unique experimental activities.Demonstrated advanced ability to analyze off-normal events and implement corrective actions and process improvements.
  • Advanced leadership and communication skills to represent firing operations to internal and external stakeholders.


Desired Qualifications-

  • Knowledge of the Weapon Physics and Design Program’s experimental operations at sites across the NNSA complex.
  • Experience in project management, including creating budgets, schedules, and resource plans relevant to experimental or high-hazard operations in an R&D environment.
  • Expert knowledge of LLNL policies, procedures and ES&H requirements, DOE regulations, national codes and standards, administrative relationships, or demonstrated ability to work in an equivalent highly regulated environment.
  • Experience as an LLNL Explosives Handler, Beryllium worker, Rad worker (II), and ability to obtain and maintain qualifications in those.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
