We have an opening for a Preventative Maintenance Engineer to support preventative maintenance and repair activities for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Optics and Materials Science and Technology (OMST) group. You will work with Engineers, System Managers and Production Managers to develop, implement, and oversee maintenance and repair plans and procedures, including development and management of spare parts inventories.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.1 or TSS.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Author and revise technical documents and maintenance procedures of limited complexity that are clear, concise, and easily implemented.
- Maintain spare parts inventory using established computerized maintenance management software (CMMS), specifically Traceability Made Easy (TME).
- Provide administrative and technical oversight in support of engineering maintenance and repair efforts, including identifying and managing material and equipment needed for limited complexity maintenance and repair of optics processing equipment.
- Ensure customer needs and issues are resolved and communicated in an effective and timely manner, providing regular detailed status updates and reports to supervisor and customers/requestors.
- Under general direction, identify risks associated with parts obsolescence and develop strategies for mitigating these risks using readily identifiable factors.
- Ensure assignments are performed in accordance with requirements and LLNL policy and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the TSS.2 Level
- Plan, initiate, and coordinate moderately complex to complex maintenance and repair efforts using automated work tracking systems.
- Collaborate in multidisciplinary teams comprised of Engineers, Production Managers, and System Managers to perform equipment risk assessments of moderately complex to complex technical systems, develop preventative maintenance plans and procedures, and to identify appropriate spare parts inventory for each system under limited direction.
- Utilize project management methods and tools to track and assess technical information involved with the moderately complex to complex work being performed.

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, nuclear, or related engineering discipline or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Sufficient technical writing skills necessary to develop engineering documents of limited complexity (operations and maintenance work procedures, work instructions, specifications, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, interlock procedures, etc.).
- Strong functional knowledge and understanding of common electromechanical industrial components, such as pumps, controllers, motors, valves, instrumentation, etc.
- Experience reading and interpreting technical documentation such as drawings (mechanical, electrical, and piping & instrumentation diagrams), maintenance plans, and procedures.
- Experience with procuring and managing spare parts inventories.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

In Addition, at the TSS.2 Level
- Relevant prior work experience in maintenance, design, and/or operations of heavy industrial equipment or precision optomechanical systems that are moderately complex to complex.
- Experience with project management methods and tools and the ability to synthesize technical information from multiple sources to make sound decisions using independent judgment and creativity.
- Comprehensive understanding of and broad experience with common electromechanical industrial components, such as pumps, controllers, motors, valves, instrumentation, etc.
- Proficient written, verbal, feedback and presentation communication skills in specific technical areas and experience to informally mentor  others in on-the-job training, with skills specific to the assignment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience authoring well-bounded work packages, including Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) or Job Hazards Assessments (JHAs), that are clear and concise.
- Experience leading walkdowns and roundtables to identify work scope, tasks, and hazards.
- Strong Excel and database skills.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
