We have an opening for a Project Leader (PL) for the Security and Protection (S&P) Program within the Security Organization (SO). The S&P Program is responsible for managing the evaluation, development and operations support of the Argus security system. You will manage a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and technicians and be responsible for all areas of project management, high-level goal setting, and developing strategies to execute the project’s annual plan to meet objectives approved by the NNSA Office of Defense Nuclear Security (NA-70).

Essential Duties

– Provide leadership, technical or operational direction to a multi-disciplinary team of matrixed scientists and technicians, including establishing and communicating schedules, cost requirements, and NNSA Headquarters priorities.

– Develop strategic initiatives to ensure the ongoing success of the enterprise solution and lead the development of future enterprise initiatives in collaboration with stakeholders.

– Develop and track project execution plans, including the allocation and monitoring of available personnel and approximately $12.8 million dollars in overall budget.

– Provide technical oversight to ensure functionality of the Argus network and allow 24x7 coverage with extremely high availability.

– Cultivate relationships with the NNSA sponsors and technology leaders, providing technical input and developing or refining new concepts to support nuclear security priorities and promote LLNL skills, expertise and technologies.

– Improve physical security efforts by effectively interfacing with the other national laboratories that have similar responsibilities. Represent LLNL at meetings that require coordination for projects related to the physical security of high consequence assets.

– Oversee development of solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues/problems where solutions require creative approaches and/or innovative solutions.

– Write Work for Others (WFO) proposals for the development of new electronic physical security technologies.

– Perform other duties as assigned.



– Bachelor’s degree in a technical area related to Engineering, Computer Science, Nuclear Security or a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and extensive related experience and ability to champion, lead, and develop creative cutting-edge solutions, principles, theories and concepts.

– Experience contributing to and developing innovative solutions, ideas, and best practices or, the resolution of complex issues associated with the application and implementation of operations processes requiring expert technical knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies in physical security systems or industrial control systems.

– Extensive experience successfully managing and leading multidisciplinary project teams.

– Ability to motivate and collaborate effectively with other personnel in achieving objectives.

– Extensive leadership experience and a proven record of resolving program management issues, as well as negotiate statements of work, timelines and deliverables.

– Significant experience developing and articulating strategic direction and value proposition, and ability to plan the integration and implementation of new programs and/or operational best practices.

– Extensive experience leading, tracking and budgeting projects that consistently require application of creativity and innovation in managing and resolving resource conflicts, effectively accomplishing goals within a multi-disciplinary team through leadership and influence.

– Significant experience working with sponsors/government agencies, such as, NNSA, DOE, DHS DoD, IC members.

– Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise at all levels – technician to senior management.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire.
