We have multiple openings for Fabrication Technician Field Leads to provide in the field leadership and guidance for our National Ignition Facility (NIF).  NIF is the world’s largest and most energetic laser.   Work will include leadership and guidance in support of electrical/electronic fabrication, assembly, test, installation, activation, and maintenance support for NIF’s diagnostic, instrumentation, control and safety systems. Other responsibilities may involve testing, characterization and documentation support. Interactions will be with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.
 
Essential Duties

- Responsible for field oversight and guidance of electronic support, fabrication, test, documentation, and maintenance for NIF Control Systems’ hardware including but not limited to cable terminations (e.g. coaxial, fiber optics, power, multi¿conductor), connectors (e.g., BNC, MS, D), electrical and electronics components, chassis, printed wiring boards, electro¿mechanical hardware.
- Provide advanced fabrication/installation support while working alongside junior Fabrication Technicians providing mentorship and guidance on standard NIF fabrication processes.
- Work with engineering as necessary to obtain additional information, clarification, or provide feedback on inconsistencies or gaps in documentation.
- Prepare work packages from engineering provided job requests.
- Utilize industry standard techniques to control Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) around susceptible components.
- Use standard fabrication tools (e.g., soldering iron, crimping tool, mechanical hand tools & power tools, drill press, power saws, Rotex punch, shears) in the fabrication and repair of complex electrical/electronic hardware.
- Perform equipment tests and collect data using fundamental knowledge of complex systems.
- Read, interpret and follow one¿line electrical diagrams, cable plant documentation and schematics as well as specific layout and assembly diagrams to construct and package electromechanical units.
- Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with Environmental, Safety, and Health policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

- Associate degree in Electronics Technology, or related technology, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge of and ability to work from verbal and written instructions, sketches, drawings, prints, and electronic schematics including experience working independently and under minimal supervision on complex technical tasks that are well understood, making functional decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Advanced technical skills and fundamental knowledge of cable/chassis fabrication technology and standards.
- Experience working in a customer service/field support environment.
- Knowledge and ability needed to work in and on large and complex electrical/electronic systems including working with electronic and computer-based instrumentation, data acquisition, control and feedback systems, interlock systems, and mechanical hardware.
- Experience leading teams in a field support environment.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) to ensure equipment and personnel safety as well as knowledge of electrical diagnostic instrumentation used in a laboratory (hand-held meters, oscilloscopes, probes, TDRS, etc.).
- Effective written, verbal, and feedback communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills and abilities.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
