We have an opening for a Software Quality and Standards Programmatic Group Lead for the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF&PS) Control Systems organization.  You will lead a team of computer scientists, engineers, technical associates, and technicians supporting the control systems development within the NIF&PS Directorate.  You will manage resources to support the coordination of control systems change planning, coordination, qualification, and operation. You will be expected to maintain a full-time programmatic project role/assignment in the NIF&PS Directorate and will report to the NIF&PS Control Systems Section Lead. This position is in the NIF Computing (NIFC) Division, within the Computing Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level depending on your qualifications and experience. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, mentoring, and supervision to group members in the execution of their work scope with a specialty in control system test & qualification, software configuration management, and facility operation.
- Develop and implement standardized procedures, processes and practices to efficiently and effectively coordinate successful qualification of multiple annual major control system releases and patches to the NIF laser facility including responsibility for:
- Oversee and direct work control, authorization and management of formal QA testbed facility and activities.
- Review all control system scheduled changes including independent assessment of machine safety requirement impacts and updates and defining and directing execution of qualification plans.
- Lead and direct facility change release planning, work control/authorization and software deployments requiring extensive coordination across multiple directorate work groups.
- Facility qualification experiment planning and scheduling, commissioning test plan preparation, organizing and leading stakeholder reviews and overseeing operational test orchestration and training.
- NIF&PS software quality assurance point of contact responsible for DOD 414.1D regulatory compliance and coordination of risk level grading reviews for all NIF&PS software products, including acting as the primary interface for all SQA internal and external audits, and responsible for provision of required ISQA documentation updates for all NIF&PS 830 software updates.
- Champion and actively encourage and oversee excellent quality practices and standards among section staff and represent NIF&PS in collaboration with the NIF and LLNL directorate leaders to review and improve software quality procedures and practices.
- Perform other duties as required.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level 
- Provide solutions to highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive issues/problems where the solution path is not known ahead of time.
- Responsible for high-level goal setting, strategic planning efforts, and succession planning on long range control system goals, working with Section Leader, Division Leader, Deputy Division Leader, and peer Group Leaders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Highly advanced experience in enterprise scale software system project management, software quality assurance, risk assessments, commissioning and operation.
- Substantial experience handling multiple priorities and tasks with excellent attention to detail in a complex technical domain.
- Highly advanced experience leading requirements-driven engineering activities from idea inception through to closure in complex technical domains.
- Expert experience in functional management and technical leadership including direction and oversight of work assignments, career management and policies and procedures.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to lead a team, present/explain complex technical information to wide and varied discipline audiences, and active participation in design reviews.
In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Extensive knowledge and demonstrated experience in project engineering, project management and systems engineering. Demonstrated ability to champion, lead, and develop innovative strategies, principles and concepts.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.
 
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experience in object-oriented software design and development.
- Comprehensive, in-depth knowledge and technical expertise with database technologies such as data analysis, data integration, data access tools, data management approaches, and relational databases.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
