We have multiple openings for Semiconductor Detector Engineers to support R&D efforts involving semiconductor-based technologies. You will be involved with the full lifecycle of experimentation and design for the involved devices. These positions are in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.   

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and development of novel technologies in the context of semiconductor-based radiation detectors, radio-isotope batteries, or other electronic devices under limited direction.
-Design, implement, and analyze techniques to simulate radiation interaction and charge transport in a variety of moderately complex to complex semiconductor materials and devices.
- Plan and execute experiments involving the fabrication and characterization of designed materials, devices and systems to validate the theory using broadly defined parameters.
- Work within a dynamic team contributing to all aspects of device and system development.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research.
- Document research and publish results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Under minimal direction, independently apply advanced knowledge in the domains of complex electrical engineering, radiation detection, nuclear engineering, or materials science leading to engineering solutions.
- Contribute to the fulfillment of project and organizational goals, mentoring and leading junior staff, sharing relevant knowledge, providing formal guidance and recommendations to project leadership.

Qualifications  
- Recent Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Applied Science, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Comprehensive experience conducting laboratory experiments in one of more of the following areas:
Radiation detection or semiconductor devices.
- Broad experience and proficiency with software such as MCNP, Silvaco, and COMSOL for device design and simulation.
- Comprehensive experience with radiation detection instrumentation.
- Ability to perform as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution under limited direction.
- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effective presentations of technical information at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Advanced knowledge in the domains of electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, materials science or related fields involving integration of complex engineering solutions.
- Significant experience applying advanced technical knowledge and methodologies to guide the successful completion of technical projects, serving as the primary technical contact, mentoring and/or leading junior staff members.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain complex technical information and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, materials science, or applied physics, or related technologies field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Knowledge of semiconductor fabrication processes (such as lithography, sputtering, e-beam, thermal evaporation, lapping and polishing, wet and dry etching techniques, wire and wafer bonding), and diagnostics (AFM, SEM, DLTS, SIMS).
- Broad experience with a variety of radiation detection technologies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
