We have an opening for a Post College Appointee to work on a project using high-speed atomic force microscopy to study real time interactions of proteins, DNA, lipid membranes and other biological entities. A successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team that works on the intersection of biophysics and materials science and would participate in the research done at LLNL in collaboration with researchers at other US and international institutions.  We are looking for bright, motivated individuals with a recent BSc degree in biology, bioengineering, biophysics, or a related field. 

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in biophysics, bioengineering, materials science, or related fields.
- Conduct work with proteins, DNA, and synthetic membrane systems.
- Develop and implement protocols for surface immobilization of proteins and protein-DNA complexes.
- Present formal and informal overviews of progress in experimental work at weekly meetings.
- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols, an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent BSc. in Biophysics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science or related field.
- Basic biological laboratory skills, including working with protein solutions, operating basic laboratory instruments, generating and handling biological waste
- Hands-on experience with high-speed atomic force microscopy imaging.
- Experience working on a team that performs basic research and the ability to understand and assist with analysis of experimental results.
- Ability to assist researchers with sample preparation and data collection.
- Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with high-speed atomic force microscopy measurements.
- Experience with preparation of surface immobilized biological samples
- Ability to follow published research protocols.

Note:   This is a one-year Post College Appointee with the possibility of extension to a maximum of two years.    Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the Bachelor degree at the time of the employment offer.
