We have an opening for an experienced Optical Engineer. You will be responsible for optical systems design, modeling, analysis, and engineering for multiple challenges including high energetic laser systems, diagnostics, and high-fidelity optical systems.  Your scope of work will involve parallel tasks with broadly defined priorities. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division of the Engineering Directorate. LSEO provides support to the National Ignition Facility & Photon Science (NIF& PS) Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Model moderately complex to complex optical systems such as high energy lasers and diagnostics in Code V.
- Perform FRED software modelling and analysis, including physical optics and scripting.
- Perform tolerancing and analysis of optical sub-systems.
- Design and analyze moderately complex to complex  optical component and system specifications.
- Perform stray light analysis and mitigation.
- Identify and resolve optical issues under limited direction, providing guidance as an informal mentor to junior team members.
- Define moderately complex to complex optical requirements from physics requirements.
- Perform conceptual and preliminary designs of optical systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Optical Engineering,  Physics, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience working optical concepts related to high energy laser, short pulse laser, and imaging systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience using Code V or equivalent optical design software (ZEMAX, FRED, OSLO).
- Ability to interpret moderately complex to complex optical and mechanical specifications for design under limited direction.
- Broad experience interfacing with customer product requirements related to optical specification and production techniques.
- Skills needed to successfully provide guidance and informal mentorship to junior team members.
- Proficient  verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present/explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
-PhD in Optical Engineering or Physics.

 

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
