Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for an experienced Laser Physicist to independently develop, research, design, analyze, model, test, and field advanced laser technology and systems. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team developing and deploying state-of-the art high intensity, high energy, short pulse laser systems for Department of Energy (DOE) and LLNL mission needs. This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Associate Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Collaborate in an interdisciplinary team that researches, designs, develops, integrates, and fields complex energetic laser systems, high peak power lasers, and high average power laser technologies, incorporating new physics and new technologies to support evolving missions.
- Conduct experiments in the fields of short pulse, high power and energy laser physics, and laser secondary source generation.
- Execute and interpret laser experiments that test new physics and inform and benchmark performance models in collaboration with laboratory scientists and engineers.
- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to assure that programmatic needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
- Prepare and provide technical presentations and publications for internal and external audiences.
- Provide significant tangible input, using advanced knowledge, in the development of broad research directions/project vision and provide technical input to small multidisciplinary work teams.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Lead system designs and apply highly complex system engineering principles to a wide variety of laser design and analysis projects.
- Research novel approaches to develop operational, system, and subsystem solutions as needed and present the results at design reviews.
- Set broad project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for self and others, while providing highly complex technical and intellectual leadership on research and development projects.

- PhD in laser physics, applied physics, general physics, atomic physics, optics or optoelectronics, or related degree or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge and significant hands-on experience in solid state laser engineering, high average power laser technology and thermal management techniques, short pulse laser physics, and/or nonlinear optics as applied to complex laser development, applications and operations.
- Advanced analytical and experimental skills to independently contribute to scientific or technical projects using creativity and innovation.
- Significant experience performing independent research and successfully collaborating with a team on complex technical tasks while devising innovative solutions for unique and complex problems.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills necessary to author technical and scientific reports, publications and invited papers, deliver scientific presentations, and interact with a diverse group.

In Addition at the SES.4 Level
- Highly advanced and expert level experience independently developing and implementing innovative solutions to a diverse range of highly complex problems.
- Expert knowledge and substantial hands-on experience in solid state laser engineering, high average power laser technology and thermal management techniques, short pulse laser physics, and/or nonlinear optics as applied to laser development, applications and operations.
- Experience leading and mentoring team members.

Desired Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge in Joule-class short pulse amplification.
- Advanced knowledge in laser material production, finishing, and coating techniques, thermal management and solid-state heat transfer techniques, and laser performance, and/or laser propagation modeling.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
