We are seeking talented engineers to join our team who can tackle complex problems related to systems in the hypersonic flight regime. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), supporting the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) Principal Directorate.

In this role you may be involved in one or more of the following activities to support enduring and future weapons systems:

- Modeling and simulation
- Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC)
- Ablation and gas-surface interaction modeling
- Aerodynamic and aerothermodynamic analysis
- Structural dynamics and thermo-structural analysis
- Reduced order modeling (ROM)
- Diagnostics and test support

These positions will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Analyze the external flight environment of an aerospace system through all phases of flight (launch, ascent, and re-entry) including all flight regimes (subsonic through hypersonic).
- Perform computational fluid dynamics (CFD), finite element analysis (FEA), or multi-physics analyses; post-process the results; document and present the results.
- Create surrogate models of the aerodynamic and aerothermal loading for use in flight simulation and finite-element analysis.
- Support ground and flight test experiments with computational analysis and data analysis.
- Develop flight simulation software of multi-degree-of-freedom systems in addition to simulating the flight dynamics of flexible bodies.
- Develop and maintain computational model and/or code documentation, verification and validation activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Participate in formal and informal reviews as required.
- Work independently and with teams to solve moderately complex engineering analysis problems.
- Support the development of new engineering analysis capabilities, such as novel boundary conditions, realistic flow conditions, non-pristine structural conditions, etc.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Fundamental knowledge of fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, flight dynamics, heat transfer, ablation, reduced order modeling, and/or GNC.
- Experience with engineering analysis using fluid, thermal, structural or multi-physics codes.
- Experience within Linux, UNIX, and Windows environments.
- Programming experience, preferably in Python, Bash, Java, C++, and/or Fortran.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team with effective organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multidisciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, document analyses, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Ability to travel as necessary for conferences, meetings, trainings, tests, etc.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Master’s or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge and experience analyzing high-speed flight vehicles, multi-physics analysis, supersonic flow, or trajectory analysis.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with commercial CFD codes (US3D, FUN3D, CART3D, CBAERO, or ATAC), ablation/thermal analysis codes ( FIAT or ICARUS), and/or  trajectory analysis or flight simulation software (TAOS, OTIS, POST2, or AFSIM).
- Experience with data science, uncertainty quantification (UQ), model verification and validation (V&V), or reduced order modeling.
- Experience in ground or flight test related activities such as post-processing sensor data, interface with hardware and software teams, generating post-test reports and documentation.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: non-equilibrium flow, multi-phase flow, high-enthalpy flows, boundary layer transition, gas-surface interaction, ablation, turbulent flow, fluid-structure interaction, and trajectory optimization.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
