We have multiple openings for experienced and accomplished Electrical Engineers to work on various projects in pulsed power and applied electromagnetics. You will provide technical leadership for the development of solutions for multiple programs at LLNL, contributing to the research and development of next-generation pulsed power systems and experimental platforms.  You will be responsible for the design, instrumentation, and execution of unique, high-value experiments that are of critical interest to national security.  You will bring innovation and technical excellence to bear on some of the most challenging technical problems our nation faces and develop novel engineering practices and approaches to continually improve performance and reliability of existing R&D platforms. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either the SES.4 or SES.5 level depending on your qualifications.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Design, test, and analyze pulsed power and electromagnetic devices and components in support of highly complex, state-of-the-art pulsed power experimental platform research and development.
- Develop pulsed power and power electronics hardware for highly complex state-of-the-art laser systems.
- Provide solutions to highly complex problems that require in-depth analysis and use of methods that may not be well defined.
- Develop, maintain, and present metrics for system reliability and performance, and use those metrics to drive investments in system improvements.
- Analyze and model/simulate the electrical performance of highly complex system components under dynamic electrical loads and/or challenging electromagnetic interference conditions.
- Provide technical leadership for teams of scientists and engineers working on a variety of pulsed power and applied electromagnetic R&D efforts; use independent judgement to devise solution methods and techniques, and evaluation criteria under consultative direction.
- Set broad research and project vision; align Engineering’s pulsed power and applied electromagnetic capabilities with issues of critical importance to the Laboratory’s mission.
- Present and disseminate research results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, in open and classified environments, internal and external to LLNL.
- Adhere to the highest standards of personnel and facility safety while leading the execution of high-energy, multi-hazard system demonstrations and experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition, at the SES.5Level
- Develop innovative and creative solutions to highly complex, sensitive, unusual and challenging problems, whose solutions represent breakthroughs in pulsed power science involving methods that may not be well defined; using extensive expertise lead efforts to advance the state-of-the-art in pulsed power and applied electromagnetics.
- Provide extensive scientific and technical direction for large projects and champion strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
- Serve as a mentor and expert across the organization in the areas of pulsed power and applied electromagnetics and serve as an organizational spokesperson to laboratory senior management as well as external sponsors and stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Subject matter expert-level knowledge of highly advanced concepts related to pulsed power, applied electromagnetics, including magnetohydrodynamics, high-voltage breakdown physics, magnetic insulation, and extremely high-current component/system design principles.
- Subject matter expertise in design, test and analysis of pulsed power and/or electromagnetic devices and components.
- Substantial experience and track record of success in a leadership role directing technical teams on highly complex and challenging problems in pulsed power or applied electromagnetics.
- Highly advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills to anticipate, identify, and independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions to highly complex engineering problems.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills; Ability to present and explain highly complex technical phenomena to senior management and/or external sponsors.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple parallel tasks, often requiring the resolution of conflicting work requirements and prioritization of tasks toward predetermined longrange targets.
In Addition, at the SES.5 Level
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and relevant previous experience.
- Nationally recognized expert in pulsed power or applied electromagnetics.
- Extensive experience and ability in a specific area of science related to pulsed power and electromagnetic hardware design, analysis, or simulation.
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
