We have an opening for a software developer to contribute to the Virtual Beam Line (VBL), a next-generation laser modelling code, supporting development of cutting-edge laser technology and providing simulations to predict the output of the National Ignition Facility (NIF). You will contribute to the development of the VBL code base and user interfaces, targeting platforms from laptops to LLNL’s latest supercomputers. This position is in the NIF Computing (NIFC) division within the Computation Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Design, develop, document, and maintain components of a laser physics simulation code, including physics modules, Graphical User Interface, frameworks, and other components.
- Implement moderately complex algorithms in C++ for laser simulations, optimized for use in High Performance Computing.
- Apply configuration management on all development artifacts.
- Document software development requirements, design, methodology, and status via technical reports.
- Interface with laser physicists to gather requirements and to document and implement simulation algorithms and methods.
- Develop and maintain unit, integration, and system tests in a continuous integration environment.
- Engage other developers frequently to share relevant knowledge, opinions, and recommendations, working to fulfill deliverables within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Work independently with minimal direction on complex problems requiring in-depth analysis.
- Apply advanced HPC techniques and technologies to implement required physics capabilities.
- Present technical approach to management and provide technical advice and direction.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or other scientific discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad experience with object-oriented software development in C++, Java, Qt, or Python.
- Experience developing moderately complex software in Linux server and HPC environments.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of the software project life cycle: feasibility, requirements, design, implementation, integration, test and deployment.
- Broad experience designing, developing, documenting, and maintaining complex software projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of numerical or scientific software development approaches and best practices.
- Experience working under limited direction on multi-disciplinary teams.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills necessary  to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present, explain, and document technical information, particularly in physics, computer science, software development, and related technical contexts.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Master’s degree in computer science or other scientific discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience independently designing and deploying software solutions.
- Experience leading software development projects.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of physics, lasers, optics, numerical analysis techniques, physics simulation development or High Performance Computing technologies.
- Experience developing software with the Scrum Agile methodology and using the Atlassian tool suite (Bamboo, BitBucket, JIRA).
- Experience developing numerical software in C++11, MPI, RAJA, OpenMP, and CUDA.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
