We have multiple openings for Mechanical Technologist/ Senior Mechanical Technologist to support the various operations of new and on-going experiments involving engineering evaluation, fabrication, assembly, and documentation for various programs in our Superblock facilities. These operations and experiments may involve working with radioactive/fissile materials to support programmatic experiments. Work may involve Beryllium, radioactive/fissile materials, other hazardous materials, and classified parts and documents. These positions are in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the 533.2 or 533.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Design, fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex mechanical components and systems.
- Operate mechanical diagnostic equipment, maintain area controls, assist with mechanical diagnostic calibration and alignment, test prior to experiment execution, and perform data recovery after experiment execution.
- Work from drawings and verbal instructions to assemble and test various mechanical designs.
- Provide general technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments within Superblock facilities and other off-site locations.
- Apply intermediate knowledge of mechanical systems to resolve a variety of moderately complex mechanical problems.
- Set up equipment, general troubleshooting, maintenance, and minor modifications of simple hardware including pressure systems.
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness while working in the laboratories and adhere to written safety procedures.
- Ensure support and experimental areas are kept clean, uncluttered, and in a state of readiness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 533.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support to resolve complex mechanical problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Independently design, fabricate, maintain, assemble, and disassemble complex mechanical components and systems, including planning, selecting material equipment, and determining solutions.
- Utilize CAD software to produce 3D models and generate detailed drawings for fabrication.

Qualifications
- Associate degree in an engineering technology field such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Intermediate understanding of machine tool technology and operation of conventional machine tools and inspection techniques.
- Intermediate technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve moderately complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Experience in fabrication and design of mechanical components and systems.
- Intermediate knowledge and understanding of pressure systems.
- Ability to maintain documentation relating to experimental assemblies.
- Effective verbal and written communications skills.
- Experience and ability to work independently, as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment.
In Addition at the 533.3 Level
- Advanced understanding of machine tool technology and operation of conventional machine tool, and inspection techniques.
- Advanced understanding of pressure systems and knowledge of work with radioactive sources.
- Experience using CAD software to produce 3D models and generate detailed drawing.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with nuclear/radiological materials.
- Knowledge of fundamentals of radiation, radioactive sources, and radiation detectors.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
