NOTE:  This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.

The Materials Science Division (MSD) in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate (PLS) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member.  The selected candidate will engage with a multi-disciplinary team on designing and carrying out experiments to investigate chemical processes in rapidly condensing plasmas.  The selected candidate will interact with other staff members in MSD, the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division of PLS, other postdocs, and sponsors across and outside the Laboratory.  This position will report to the Reaction Dynamics Group Leader.
- Participate in development and testing of new experimental methods to elucidate formation of molecular species and particles in condensing plasma.
- Perform studies to optimize experimental methodologies and design.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data and compare with model predictions.
- Function as an independent researcher with a high-level of attention to detail.
- Communicate research progress by means of publications in peer reviewed scientific or technical journals, and internal reports.
- Maintain professional and institutional visibility through participation in conferences.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of experimental optical spectroscopy techniques, especially time-resolved infrared vibrational spectroscopy using pulsed and continuous wave laser systems.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret experimental data.
- Demonstrated ability to perform independent research, find or create innovative solutions and produce significant accomplishments to address scientific and technical problems.
- Recent record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Demonstrated fundamental verbal and written communication skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical and scientific reports and publications, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently, and as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the physics of plasmas, and/or chemistry induced by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), or combustion phenomena.
- Experience developing experimental methods designed to understand fundamental processes in plasma physics/chemistry or combustion chemistry.
- Experience with computational simulation methods and code development as it relates to plasma physics or plasma induced chemistry or combustion chemistry.
- Experience in statistical analysis of data.
- Programming skills in LabView, MatLab, and Mathematica.
