We have multiple openings for staff research scientists in the fields of operations research and systems analysis. You will support a variety of projects related to LLNL focus areas such as cyber security, additive manufacturing, computational biology/precision medicine, and high-performance computing. As needs arise, you will have the opportunity to support other efforts across the Laboratory. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is ideal: optimization, simulation optimization, reinforcement learning/optimal control, statistics, and/or network analysis. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.
 
These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
 
Essential Duties
- Conduct research in and development of one or more of the following areas: modeling and simulation of complex systems, reinforcement learning, algorithm design, and data analytics.
- Design, implement, and analyze techniques in one or more of the above areas.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
- Lead/mentor student fellows and summer student researchers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition at the SES.3 Level
- Balance multiple projects/tasks and priorities of customers and partners to ensure deadlines are met, while working independently with minimal direction within scope of the assignment.
- Serve as a technical point of contact with internal and external collaborators.
 
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in operations research, systems engineering, data science, statistics, applied mathematics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge and relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: optimization, stochastic processes, modeling and simulation, statistics, reinforcement learning, data analysis, decision analysis, systems analysis, algorithms, and/or graph theory.
- Experience with a programming language (e.g., Java, Python, C++).
- Experience performing effective independent research.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

In addition, at the SES.3 Level
-  Advanced knowledge and significant experience in one or more of the following areas: optimization, stochastic processes, modeling and simulation, statistics, reinforcement learning, data analysis, decision analysis, systems analysis, algorithms, and/or graph theory.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, document work, prepare and present successful proposals and high-quality research papers, and provide advice to management.
 
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in operations research, systems engineering, data science, statistics, applied mathematics or related field.
- Experience with analysis software packages (e.g., R, MATLAB).
- Experience with parallel and/or high-performance computing.
 

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the particular assignment.

If you are selected and a security clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.  In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
