We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to pursue fundamental and applied nuclear science using large-scale antineutrino detectors. You will play a major role in the design, construction, and operation of a kiloton-scale gadolinium-doped water Cherenkov detector known as WATCHMAN, the Water Cherenkov Monitor for Antineutrinos. This position is in the Rare Event Detection group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.
 
Essential Duties
- Assist with design studies of the detector, including the effects of Photo Multiplier Tube coverage, fiducial volume definition, Gd-doping levels, and other parameters.
- Assist with simulations and analysis of the sensitivity of the WATCHMAN detector.
- Take regular trips to the detector installation site in the UK during the detector deployment phase.
- Oversee deployment and analysis work performed by graduate students. 
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
-  Document research, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
 
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in astroparticle physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
- Experience designing, assembling, and running physics experiments.
- Experience with data analysis and interpretation.
- Ability to work independently on technical tasks, exert influence on technical objectives, provide analyses, and develop unique technical solutions.
- Ability to work independently as well as in multidisciplinary research teams. 
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
