We have an opening for an Engineering Design Supervisor to support the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate.  The successful candidate will establish scope of work, provide advanced technical support and leadership in the areas of mechanical design, while having administrative supervisory authority.  This will include solving complex to highly complex technical problems, regularly collaborating with scientists, engineers, and high-level technical personnel, both internal and external to NIF.  This position is in Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Apply innovative and advanced technical expertise to the development and design of complex NIF mechanical engineering challenges.
- Capture design solutions in Creo Parametric and maintain documentation in the Windchill/ELM configuration management (CM) system.
- Present, author, critically review, and oversee the development of formal written documentation.
- Plan, organize, and lead multiple complex to highly complex projects.
- Provide technical advice and direction to mentor and lead designers, making decisions using independent discretion and judgment.
- Provide leadership and full supervisory responsibility to group members; to include personnel actions and administration of policies and procedures, personnel related functions including interview and selection of hires, performance evaluations, ranking, salary recommendations and promotions, and conducting training reviews.
- Participate in strategic planning, organization, and budgeting with senior staff.
- Responsible for the general oversight and personal commitment to the goals of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all ES&H regulations, good business practices, diversity, and equal opportunity.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Bachelor's degree in mechanical technology or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Advanced skills, knowledge and experience in the design of mechanical systems.
- Significant applied experience with Creo Parametric, Windchill Product Lifecycle Management software and/or CM system.
- Ability to make frequent decisions using independent discretion and judgment providing original solutions, establishing or modifying guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Advanced technical leadership skills within mechanical technology environment.
- Significant experience providing advanced technical direction to others.
- Significant experience working in a multi-disciplinary project environment effectively involving simultaneous commitments to performance, cost, and schedule.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills and strong formalized reporting, presentation and feedback skills.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience managing safety in a laboratory or production environment.
- Experience interacting with and satisfying customer needs in a highly technical setting.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
