We have an opening for an experienced Optical Design Engineer. You will be responsible for optical systems design, modeling, analysis, and engineering for an array of situations including machine vision systems, diagnostics, and high-fidelity optical systems. Assignments may include field work to support initial deployment of your designs. Your scope of work will involve parallel tasks with broadly defined priorities. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Perform moderately complex to complex optical systems design and engineering.
- Define moderately complex to complex optical requirements from physics requirements.
- Perform conceptual and preliminary designs of optical systems, and tolerance analysis.
- Design and analyze moderately complex to complex optical component and systems specifications for visible and infrared systems.
- Perform hyperspectral imaging system design.
- Review progress of construction and initial deployment of the optical system to ensure goals and objectives are being met.
- Prepare supporting safety and engineering documentation and participate in engineering design reviews.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.3 Level
- Provide engineering solutions to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Perform independent in-depth technical analysis to provide solutions for a diverse range of complex issues.
- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on analysis of multiple factors.
- Guide and oversee the construction and initial deployment of the optical system.

- Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Physics or other technical area, or the equivalent combination of education and previous related experience.
- Broad experience in optical specification and production techniques.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Code V or equivalent optical design software (ZEMAX, FRED, OSLO).
- Expertise in optical sensor, telescope and camera designs, potentially including; Dyson spectrometers, Offner telescopes, fiber coupling, light projection, or hybrid spectrometer designs.
- Experience preparing formal written documentation in an engineering environment.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

In Addition, at the SES. 3 Level
- Advanced knowledge of optical design and significant experience solving complex optical problems.
- Significant experience relating mechanical design and tolerances to optical performance and tolerances
- Significant experience interacting and cooperating with all levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD degree in Optical Engineering, Physics or other technical area, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Demonstrated leadership skills for leading and managing small, multi-disciplinary teams.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
