We have an opening for an Environmental Sampling, Monitoring, and Testing (ESMT) Technician to conduct groundwater and soil vapor sampling, water level monitoring, and hydraulic/pneumatic testing of wells at our Livermore Site in Livermore, California, and Site 300 in Tracy, California. You will be responsible for development of new wells, performing well maintenance, and assisting with pump installations, surface completions, and occasional soil sampling. This position is in the Environmental Restoration Department (ERD).
Essential Duties
- Measure groundwater levels manually on a quarterly basis; deploy, configure, operate, and maintain data loggers and groundwater measurement equipment.
- Provide general technical support to scientists and senior technical personnel by collecting, analyzing and interpreting water level data to resolve moderately complex technical problems.
- Conduct final well-development, baseline hydraulic tests, and complete baseline sampling of new wells; assist with pump installations; construct and maintain surface completion of wells.
- Prepare sample containers and labels, complete sampling logbook and associated chain-of-custody forms and other QA/QC requirements and collect and deliver samples to established courier service pickup point.
- Operate vapor-sampling equipment and collect vapor samples; operate, calibrate and maintain multi-parameter probes.
- Transport portable water tanks to and from well sites, track and properly dispose collected groundwater; operate pump truck, sampling rig, and forklift.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associate degree in environmental technology or other relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience with some related experience in environmental restoration activities.
- Intermediate technical knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic testing methods, with experience using the hardware and software necessary to collect and process data; intermediate mechanical skills such as piping, plumbing, and pump repair.
- Intermediate skills in the use of a broad range of environmental monitoring equipment, such as data loggers, pressure transducers, pH and conductivity meters, and groundwater sampling devices.
- Elementary technical understanding of well development techniques, groundwater sampling methodologies, and basic groundwater chemistry.
- Intermediate computer skills using both Macintosh and Windows platforms for processing and reporting groundwater monitoring data; ability to keep orderly records.
 - Experience identifying and resolving moderately complex technical problems using decision making, field experience, and judgment; ability to work alone or as part of a team in varying field conditions.
- Possess effective written, verbal, feedback, and communication skills to effectively communicate technical information with a diverse set of employees and subcontractors.
- Current OSHA HAZWOPER certification; ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs; must possess a valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of well locations at Livermore Site and Site 300, and familiarity with Livermore Site and Site 300 Environmental Restoration Program operations.
- Understanding of ERD web-based data review and collection tools, hand-held mobile data acquisition applications, and treatment facility operational data display for possible use during hydraulic tests.
- Hazardous and radioactive waste generation certification, and experience driving 4x4 truck.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.  Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).
