For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Surveillance Mechanical Technologist /Sr. Mechanical Technologist. You will be responsible for supporting surveillance of selected components at production agencies across the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE). You will work as an independent contributor and as a member of a multidisciplinary team. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED)/Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program, within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 533.2 or 533.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide general technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments at LLNL and other off-site locations.
- Support formal process and design evaluations and accompany review, oversight, and quality policy implementation and documentation.
- Serve as a Surveillance Group interface to other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to satisfy various LLNL design agency responsibilities.
- Support development of new test plans and troubleshooting of ongoing efforts.
- Participate in meetings where concepts are determined and translated into possible courses of actions.
- Apply intermediate knowledge of materials and manufacturing process in solving mechanical problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 533.3 Level
- Provide advanced technical support to engineers/scientists in solving complex technical problems to various projects associated with the WTE Program.
- Define, interpret, design, oversee fabrication and operation of experimental test hardware and diagnostics, utilizing knowledge of mechanical or electronic equipment.
- Assist in developing test parameters, comprehensive troubleshooting and testing materials, components, or systems, identifying problems, and providing input on solutions.

Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Mechanical or Electronic Engineering Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related technical discipline.
- Intermediate knowledge of and experience working with classified materials, experimental data, and documentation.
- Intermediate knowledge in engineering design, fabrication, assembly techniques and materials, including theory.
- Intermediate knowledge of material properties and manufacturing methods.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills and ability to work constructively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Ability to complete and maintain certifications as required by the position.
- Ability to travel.

In Addition at the 533.3 Level
- High level technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to read and follow complex assembly procedures, engineering notes, sketches, and engineering drawings.
- Experience developing conceptual designs of mechanical/electronic systems, testing prototypes, and associated diagnostics.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of materials, equipment, or technologies associated with high explosives, vacuum technologies, or radiography.
- Knowledge and experience in LLNL stockpile weapon systems, components, and related diagnostic and testing equipment.
- QA/QC documentation skills used in an engineering environment.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 

 

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
