We have multiple openings for Fabrication Assistants. You will perform semi-skilled tasks in support of tradespersons involved in fabrication activities. You will solve fundamental problems relating to assignments. You will provide advice to others relative to handling and disposal of hazardous materials and interact with tradespersons and shop personnel. This position may require flexibility to work overtime, shift and, or weekends to accomplish goals. These positions are in the Manufacturing Engineering Section (MES) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
Essential Duties
- Assist Machine shop personnel with moderately complex machine tool installations and removals, supporting common setups on machine tools and other fabrication or inspection equipment.
- Handle and discard hazardous materials produced from the operation of machining equipment such as lubricating oils and scrap material and perform machine tool coolant recycling and waste management.
- Prepare materials for use by skilled workers and dispose scrap materials and finished parts for shipment.
- Operate overhead traveling cranes, hydraulic lifts, forklifts, and other handling equipment.
- Maintain proper oil levels for various machine tools.
- Operate saws and maintain blade inventories.
- Perform general shop housekeeping, organize and maintain inside and outside of shop, including inspecting the eyewash and emergency lighting systems.
- Clean and maintain shop equipment, machines and work areas, including shop vacuum systems and waste accumulation areas within the Manufacturing Engineering Section.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Associate degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology or equivalent with intermediate level fabrication support experience or previous relevant fabrication support experience and education equivalent to Associate degree.
- Intermediate knowledge of shop math, mechanical drawing, and blueprint reading.
- Experience in quality and productivity procedures, including ES&H procedures.
- Experience working in a machine shop environment, including use of basic hand tools and power saws.
- Ability to work overtime, shift and, or weekends.
- Effective written, verbal and presentation communication skills.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at time of hire. 


Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
