Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an inorganic analytical chemist to analyze the chemical composition (assay, impurities, and isotopic composition) of actinide materials. You will perform a full range of moderately complex to complex research in actinide materials characterizations.  This position is in the Plutonium Science and Technology group in the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
-  Conduct moderately complex to complex research in actinide materials characterizations and sample preparations.
- Perform work in gloveboxes and other contamination enclosures.
- Prepare written analyses, verbal briefings, and other products that capture and communicate research results.
- Present research findings to sponsors and consumers.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to design, build, maintain, or modify specialized equipment/ instrumentation for actinide materials characterization to meet sponsor needs in appropriate national security areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Evaluate, identify, and develop solutions to highly unusual, unique, and complex issues related to actinide materials characterization.
- Conduct advanced actinide analytical chemistry research and serve as the primary technical contact on actinide analytical chemistry.
- Mentor other analysts as necessary.

Qualifications
- BS in chemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Broad understanding of basic analytical chemistry techniques, including multielement instrumental analyses (such as mass spectroscopy and emission spectroscopy) and classical wet-chemistry techniques (such as spectrophotometry and titrimetry.)
- Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
- Experience in design of experiments for chemical characterizations.
- Experience with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience operating computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research and development environment.
-Ability to obtain and maintain fissile material handler certification.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- PhD in chemistry, materials science or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Significant experience and advanced knowledge in actinide analytical chemistry and characterization, and experience with radioactive materials and contamination control, along with a deep understanding of the limitations and sources of uncertainties in analytical measurements.
- Ability to lead independent work on complex technical tasks, to exert significant influence on technical objectives, and to provide in-depth analyses, and develop unique technical solutions.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in analytical chemistry characterization of actinide materials.
- Experience with analytical instrumentation and interpreting results.
