Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to conduct research in the areas of computational systems biology. This position is in the Biochemical and Biophysical Systems group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in computational microbiology in the areas of microbial ecology and bioenergy research.
- Develop genome-scale models of metabolism in bacteria and algae and spatially multiscale dynamic reaction and transport models of biophysical systems.
- Investigate the system-level underpinnings of processes involved in symbiotic interactions between algae and bacteria in co-cultured communities.
- Examine interactions between microbes and the surrounding medium using methods such as dynamic flux balance analysis (FBA).
- Contribute to the conception, design and execution of experiments and in silico analyses to address defined problems.
- Develop new computational tools for high performance computing studies.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment and other national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Understanding of the concepts of microbial physiology (particularly metabolism), systems biology and dynamics of multi-cellular communities.
- Experience in mathematical modeling of networks.
- Experience with phase-inversion or related techniques for porous support fabrication.
- Ability to understand and analyze transport experiments and nanocomposite fabrication processes.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with programming for parallel computing and system-level modeling methods like FBA and tools like COBRA.
- Experience using tools of linear programming and operations research.
- Experience in bioinformatics and computational analyses.
