For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an Onsite Maintenance Lead to provide advanced technical support to the engineering and maintenance organization for optics processing and metrology within the National Ignition Facility & Photon Sciences Directorate (NIF&PS).  You will ensure the reliable operation of optics processing and metrology machines and equipment in production environments at LLNL.  Additionally, you will have technical lead and supervisory responsibilities.  You will report to the Optics and Materials Science & Technology (OMST) Engineering & Maintenance Group Lead for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Engineering Superintendent. NIF is a 24/7 operational facility and may require working a flexible schedule to meet group needs.  Some work may occur in radiological environments.  This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) division of the Engineering Directorate.    

Essential Duties
- Provide on-the-job training and mentoring of team members, including hands-on qualification as well as writing and maintaining worker training qualification cards.
- Maintain on-call and off-shift support scheduling for off-hours support.
- Maintain Responsible Individual (RI) role for onsite work control documents to ensure safety of workers and appropriateness of controls.
- Assign, delegate, lead and coordinate upgrades and maintenance tasks of team members performing work in onsite optics processing facilities; determine appropriate work methods and establish priorities in order to meet programmatic requirements.
- Plan and execute preventative & reactive maintenance and system upgrades on onsite optics processing equipment; assess and procure critical spares for systems.
- Author, update, and review maintenance and operations plans and procedures, including Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and equipment risk assessments.
- Provide regular, formalized reports on status, plans, and progress of activities to senior management on a routine basis.
- Provide direct administrative supervision for OMST technicians and other matrixed support personnel; participate in hiring activities, ranking, re-classes, performance evaluation, peer grouping, and salary management process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in an electronics, mechanical, or related technology field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant technical experience in the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of large optics processing equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience troubleshooting electronics, wiring, LabVIEW-based computer controls, motion controls, and PLCs.
- Significant experience in the configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of a wide variety of complex machine control and instrumentation systems involving: vacuum and pressure controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, pumps, fluid level and flow controls, temperature controls including cryogenics, vision systems / cameras, laser systems, and/or laser diagnostics.
- Significant experience performing, teaching, and leading chemical changeouts for optics processing equipment, especially toluene, acids, caustics, and various optical coating fluids.
- Advanced skills and understanding of relevant technologies and processes, to design complex systems and solve complex technical problems.
- Significant experience mentoring and training less experienced team members and providing technical leadership through the effective utilization of people and available resources.
- Ability to work occasional alternate work shifts, overtime and/or weekends and potentially work in an “on call” status. Ability to travel to vendor facilities.
- Advanced written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to deliver timely, constructive, and effective performance feedback and deliver presentations in specific technical areas.

Desired Qualifications
- Certified Journeyman Electrician or Millwright.
- Significant experience working in clean rooms up to class 100 including wearing clean room apparel and adherence to clean room protocols.
- Proficiency in the use of common machine shop equipment and shop safety.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
