For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to work in the area of chemical engineering with expertise in microbiology, bioengineering, and bioprocessing. This position is in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in the field of chemical engineering, microbiology, and process engineering.
- Develop process engineering solutions for mineral formation and metal recovery applications.
- Apply mathematical models for experimental optimization and operate ion and optimize bioreactor runs for fermentation.
- Design and implement experiments in microbial CO2 generation, solubility and retainment.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Organize, analyze, publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment and other national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or related field.
- Experience in chemical engineering of biological processes and developing and applying mathematical models for process optimization.
- Experience in CO2 solubility and thermodynamics, bioreactor operation, bacterial culturing, fermentation, and bioprocessing.
- Experience with microbial analysis and imaging techniques (light microscopy, SEM, TEM) and the ability to understand and analyze experimental results.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge in minerology, aquatic chemistry, and mineral-microbe interactions.
- Experience with thermodynamic modeling of chemical speciation.   
- Experience with experimental equipment design/development, and a wide range of analytical techniques.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
