For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to conduct research in the area of biohydrometallurgy. This position is in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in the field of biohydrometallurgy.
- Design, implement, and analyze experiments for microbe-metal interactions involving bioadsorption.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment and other national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook including complete records of experiments.
- Organize, analyze and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present research results at national and international conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Science, Geochemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical/Bio Engineering, or related field.
- Experience with column chromatography and analytical techniques.
- Experience with polymer chemistry, particularly for biological applications.
- Knowledge in geochemistry of metals.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution; ability to understand and analyze experimental results.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge in microbe-metal interactions.
- Experience with microscopy, electron microscopy, spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques.
- Experience with bacterial cell culturing.

 

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
