Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to play a major role in developing and conducting nuclear physics experiments to improve the beta-decay data for fission products that are of importance to stockpile stewardship, nuclear energy, and nuclear astrophysics. You will set up experiments at this facility, collect data using radioactive beams, and develop new analysis techniques to study beta-decay properties in detail, as well as participate in the overall beta-decay program which includes using newly-developed radiation detectors and ion traps. This position is in the Nuclear and Particle Physics group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Conduct beta-decay spectroscopy experiments at accelerator-based facilities.
- Perform data analysis and interpret the results of experiments.
- Lead development of detector systems needed for beta-decay studies, including those using trapped ions and deposited beams.
- Develop simulations of detector performance and validate simulations using calibration sources and experimental results.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Work in close collaboration with colleagues at Argonne National Laboratory and other institutions to perform measurements on radioactive nuclei.
- Provide technical contributions to the development of future nuclear physics experiments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in a nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry or related field.
- Knowledge of accelerator-based nuclear physics experiments and nuclear decay spectroscopy.
- Experience with charged-particle and gamma ray detectors and radiation counting and their associated data analysis.
- Programming experience in C++ and/or other programming languages.
- Experience performing analysis using ROOT and GEANT4, or similar programs.
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature in physics or a related field.
- Experience working collaboratively as part of a focused team.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
