For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a High-Voltage Electrician/Lineman.  You will perform a variety of specialized maintenance, operations, installation, repair, replacement, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning activities on medium-voltage and high-voltage electric utility systems and equipment located at LLNL’s Site 300 in Tracy, California.  This position is in the High-Voltage Utility Systems Division within the Facilities & Infrastructure Department.

 

Essential Duties

- Perform journey level electrical work.

- Perform maintenance, switching operations, installation, repair, replacement, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning work on overhead pole-lines, transformers, switches and other electrical equipment used in the overhead distribution of electric power at the 15kV and 115kV voltage levels.

- Work with other craft personnel and provide technical guidance.

- Provide effective and timely customer service to clients and team members.

- Prepare and deliver reports; fill out preventative maintenance requests, deficiency reports, and work orders using a personal computer.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; Completion of apprenticeship program in the electrician trade or equivalent experience.

- Basic Journey level skills, knowledge and abilities needed to maintain, operate, install, repair, replace, test, troubleshoot, and commission transformers, switches, conductors, power-poles, and associated pole-mounted equipment and hardware used in the overhead distribution of electric power at the 15kV and 115kV voltage levels.

- Experience operating and working from a utility-type high-reach bucket truck and digger-derrick.

- Demonstrated customer service and interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively in writing and verbally with technical, administrative, and management personnel.

- Ability to work effectively as a team member.

- Knowledge of personal computers and associated software to prepare logs and reports, send and receive e-mails, perform computer-based training, and timekeeping entry.

- Ability to work scheduled, on-call, and emergency overtime.

- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Class C Driver’s License.

 

Desired Qualifications

- Experience in substation maintenance and operations.

- Experience reading electrical diagrams, testing protective relays, and working from drawings.

- Knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code and OSHA Safety Regulations.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.  Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidiomycosis).

The Laboratory performs a variety of work, including some that may fall under Davis Bacon Act requirements.  When work scope falls under this Act, the Laboratory complies with the prevailing wage requirements.
