For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have openings for experienced Construction/ Facilities Engineers to support facility design and installation projects within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences Directorate (NIF&PS). NIF provides the scientific community with an unprecedented capability for studying materials at extreme pressures, temperatures, and densities and it is supported by a wide variety of support facilities. You will be responsible for providing technical expertise for new mechanical and facility systems to build out new or reconfigured lab and other facility spaces as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades to existing systems.  You will have opportunities to work on the entire lifecycle of mechanical and facility systems.  These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the TSS.2 or TSS.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Perform engineering facility design and installation support for new facility systems as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades of existing systems.
- Contribute to the design of projects from the conceptual phase through construction oversight, including interior and exterior design based on customer requirements and vision.
- Utilize broadly defined engineering concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the industry including development of moderately complex drawings, visualizations, and presentations.
- Review and update drawings provided by senior architects and engineers within multiple design tools.
- Interact with multi-discipline internal team of mechanical, electrical, and structural disciplines for design and construction.
- Contribute to projects and recommend solutions to a diverse range of moderately complex issues, work collaboratively with internal customers, external consultants and contractors.
- Participate in performing field inspections, measurements, and calculations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the TSS.3 Level
- Independently develop designs of facility systems and conduct informal and formal design reviews, determining objectives, determine methods, techniques and evaluation criteria.
- Lead projects, develop and track schedules and allocation of resources and budget, exerting significant influence on major organizational objectives.
- Represent the organization as the technical resource on tasks and projects. Serves on internal technical/advisory committees and may serve on external committees.

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Industrial, or Architectural Engineering or a related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and demonstrated ability to perform independent work.
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with mechanical and facility system design and construction techniques and related engineering principles.
- Experience with procedures, work control, and configuration management.
- Experience working effectively in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, which includes working with scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers and recommending solutions to a diverse range of moderately complex issues.
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant engineering/ architectural concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the industry.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the TSS.3 Level
- California certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), Project Management Professional (PMP), or equivalent certification in another state.
- Advanced knowledge and significant experience with civil, electrical, mechanical, and facility systems, including working knowledge of standards and applicable building codes.
- Applied knowledge of LEED principles including certification or the ability to obtain certification.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Industrial or Architectural Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience with NFPA, SMACNA, and other industrial facility codes.
- Experience with construction estimating and scheduling.
- Experience with modeling applications such as Revit, AutoCAD, or equivalent.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
