Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the development of detailed chemical kinetic models for transportation fuels.  You will estimate thermodynamic properties, develop reaction paths for new fuels, estimate rate constants and validate chemical kinetic mechanisms by comparison to experimental data. This position is in the combustion kinetics team in the Reaction Dynamics group of the Materials Science Division.
 Essential Duties
- Develop new chemical kinetic mechanisms for hydrocarbon and alternative fuels.
- Validate these mechanisms by comparing computed results using the mechanism to experimental results for combustion devices such as rapid compression machines, shock tubes, flow reactors, jet-stirred reactors, premixed and non-premixed flames.
- Model combustion under conditions found in advanced combustion engines using the newly developed mechanisms.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in the area of combustion research.
- Comprehensive knowledge of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics of hydrocarbons.
- Experience in running the Chemkin code or equivalent code.
- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in well-written published papers and effective presentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience with developing chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms.
- Experience with running the Gaussian or other similar codes to compute thermodynamic parameters of species and reaction rate constants.
- Experience and knowledge of experimental combustion devices like shock tubes, rapid compression machines, flow reactors, jet stirred reactors, and premixed flames.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.  This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance:  None required.

Note:   This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.  Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
